Breaking the Cycle: Selling Project-Based Learning to Students & Teachers

After many years of schooling based on standardized testing, standardized curriculum, and standardized dreams, it stands to reason that project-based learning can be a tough sell. For educators — and especially students — inured to the industrial environment still prevalent in our schools, the freedom of project-based approaches can be paralyzing.

How do we introduce a new method of teaching to students, administrators, fellow teachers, and even to ourselves, in a way that reveals its magic and potential up front? We’ll explore how to front-load and scaffold project-based ideas so that even students addicted to the game of school will want to play on a different platform.

Project-based learning

“Project-based learning” is a new name for a tried-and-true practice. Each of my classes contains PBL elements, and I help teachers think through how to integrate more real-world projects into their existing curricula. It’s easier than you might think, and more fun.

Inquiry-based education

When students ask their own questions, they learn more and dive deeper. The research proves this, but the process can seem daunting. How can we get students to generate their own questions and become more active contributors to their own learning? We’ll learn what works, what doesn’t, and how to layer deep, student-generated questions onto your existing work.

Student agency & autonomy

In WACS, students apply for or invent their own jobs and the classroom runs according to their interests and passions. Students set their own deadlines, hold each other accountable, and work together to serve our community with the stories and information it needs. Students have produced staff-recruitment videos, deep-dive documentaries, and cross-district collaborations that demonstrate how stories help build communities and serve real needs.

Producing work for real audiences

Teachers know students learn better when they are invested in the process. The best way to make them invested is to give them a real-world project with a real-world audience — not just the teacher, and not just their classmates. Finding those audiences and serving them makes time in class more interesting for students, and the process of coaching them more exciting for us. It’s a win-win.
